The hospital TV became a video call home.

JourneyPX is MDM Commercial's patient experience platform, running on medical-grade televisions in hospital rooms. I built the native iOS and Android apps that let a patient's family and friends join a call on that TV, on hardware the patient never has to hold.

The problem

A phone is the wrong device
for a hospital bed.

A patient in a hospital bed is often in the worst possible position to hold a phone at arm's length. CBS News covered the case that makes the point: a mother in a maternity ward with twin newborns in her arms, whose family was in another country.

JourneyPX already had the right screen in the room. The televisions are medical-grade units running MDM Commercial's software, with a camera mounted on top. What was missing was the other end of the call. The apps I built are that other end: a relative installs the app, and the call lands on the TV at the foot of the bed with nothing for the patient to hold.

The app

From install to connected call.

The whole app is built around one job, so the path from opening it for the first time to being on a call is short. Every image below is a screen from the shipped iOS app.

Engineering notes

Built to the constraints
of a regulated environment.

Healthcare software changes what counts as a good decision. These are the constraints that shaped the apps.

Patient data stayed out of the apps

The apps are HIPAA regulated, and the design goal was that a phone in a relative's hand should never be holding protected health information. Room and identity handling was built so patient information was not passed around on the back end, and the client app works without ever needing to know who the patient is.

Two native apps, not one cross-platform one

iOS and Android were each built natively, the iOS side in Swift and UIKit. Real-time video, background call delivery, and platform notification behavior are the areas where native access matters most, and both apps had to behave like a phone call rather than like a web page.

Notifications that a muted phone still hears

A missed call from a hospital is not the same as a missed marketing push. The iOS app requests critical alerts, an entitlement that lets a notification sound through silent mode and Do Not Disturb, alongside the standard notification permission.

Onboarding measured in seconds

The person installing this app is often a family member who just got difficult news. Registration is a name and a phone number, with no password and no account recovery path to get stuck in, and the app drops straight onto the call screen afterwards.

In the press

"Hospital technology connects
loved ones from afar."

CBS News Chicago covered JourneyPX in use in the Mother-Baby Unit at St. Anthony's Hospital, where it connected a new mother with family overseas.
